Where You Go, I Will Go
On April 1st, 2010, I made the toughest decision of my life. I left my family in Africa and moved to the United States. I was in my early twenties and I had depended on my parents throughout my life so leaving them was a decision I didn’t want to make. But one thing that motivated me to move was that America is a place where happiness and a better life can be pursued.
In the book of Ruth, we read about the story of Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi; a story that focuses on spiritual relationships. Ruth took a leap of faith and decided to follow her mother-in-law even though everything ‘in human sense’ was against her. Ruth had lost her husband and as a young woman, the most sensible decision to make was to move on and find a new husband. However, she decided to serve her mother-in-law and worship the God of Israel. She said "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). Ruth came to the cross bridge of making a life changing decision: to follow Naomi or go on her own separate way. Ruth, in her mind, believed that God was with her mother-in-law and following her would be the wise decision.
As we are about to enter New Year, this is the time you will make New Year resolutions and will pray that the coming year will be a better year than ever, both physically and spiritually. But sometime, you will come to a point that you have to make tough decisions to stay on the right path with Christ. That is when your faith will be tested.
The world we live in today is filled with so many things that give pleasure, but true fulfillment only comes when we take a leap to follow Christ.
Jesus Christ is knocking on your door; He is asking you “Will you follow me?”
May He strengthen you to make the right decisions and walk in the truth and the spirit!
